A Note on Ramadan Fasting

I have an opinion about Ramadan fasting. it is very good to give rest to our body, so Ramadan fasting is excellent to keep ourselves healthy. One who performs fasting in Ramadan will never get any disease as per Koran and also supported by general medical principles.

According to my observation in my state-Kerala(India), the rate of ailments among Muslims are comparatively higher than other communities. Why is this paradox irrespective of fasting? i comprehend the main reason for being sick is Money!!!! Most men folks work in foreign countries and send a lot of money to their homes in Kerala; in most houses, husbands are staying in a forgiven country and family in India. His family live a luxurious life and consume luxurious foods daily, which is mainly of meat and fried fishes, and use ghee or refined oils for cooking, which increases the fat content. Our body constitution is vegetarian just like the constitution of a cow or a goat. Imagine what will happen if a cow or goat eats meat? It will be awkward for its stomach, because it wont get digested easily as vegetables. Constitution of a lion and tiger is very much different from a cow or goat. As a result, meat consumed by tiger and lion are digested naturally because their stomach is suitable for non vegetarian foods. Human beings can also eat meat or fish but one have to toil much on exercises to get it digested. How many among us bother to do exercises?

Now let us examine the connection link between Muslims and disease. In Kerala, rich Muslims people spend more money for luxurious foods. Christians are also rich but they don't spend much money for luxurious cuisines. Hindus are mostly poor people so they don't have enough money for luxurious food habits. Rich Muslims as said before spends lot of money for luxurious foods and consumes meat almost on daily basis. Most Muslim homes have servants for doing household chores, cleaning the home, preparing the food, washing clothes and watering the lands, trees, and plants. Hence they lack exercises for the heavy food they consume and obviously make them vulnerable to disease because of indigestion..

It is certain that, the indigestion is the road to reach the diseases. To make it concrete let us illustrate the following example- what will happen when the dead materials not melting into soil? It wont get decomposed and affects the environment badly. One of the prominent reason why the environmentalist want to BAN plastic materials is because, plastic materials are not getting decomposed therefore cannot be re-usable by any means. So what happens is-anything that which is not decomposed will transform into another worse form. Other wise where will it go? Similarly undigested food creates diseases, for ex- if we have indigestion- head affects first, and a headache or other illness is certain. Similarly tensions and worries first affect the stomach. If we are sad, we don't want to eat anything and even if we eat still it wont get digested easily, because tensions produce certain chemicals in the body which mars the easy digestion process; thus definitely our food and mind have a close association with diseases.

Now let us examine the Ramadan fast; it is 100% sure that fasting is excellent for the body to accelerate robust health. But what we are doing after fasting? i mean these days everything have become mechanical and changed. In Ramadan (at least in my state), it is a celebration of food festivals/ ifhtar festivals. People will make different variety of dishes and that too in very large quantity than normal. I think these people have not understood the real meaning of fasting. Fasting as far from my knowledge is- everything should be below normal. One should not show their pomp in celebration. Ramadan is not a month of food celebration but a month of spiritual celebration, its a month that gives insight towards vanities of celebrations. Its given for the people to understand the real meaning of starvation; it exemplifies the difficulty to live without food. Therefore open your eyes look around at the millions of people who don't have any food to eat, and sympathize with them, feel for them and give zakat to help them for their needs to sustain life. It also have another aspect, much more crucial one, money should not be concentrated to some people, it should be given to others also. Man wont give even a penny to others without knowing real facts himself, so you yourselves understand the real effects of starvation and as a result you can know others miserable conditions. So show mercy, feed them and help them when they are empty handed, this is what I believe is one of the main objective of fasting.

Well, this is only an ethical side of fasting. now let me tell you, how our fasting is creating bad effects health wise. As per our body conditions, if you fast a day, then one should not take solids foods immediately, one or two days, you have to take liquid foods or little food which wont give heavy loads for the stomach. While fasting our body is in a process of rest and gets the time to remove unnecessary toxins from the body. Toxins means undigested food. These toxins later on creates diseases, and is deposited in our body as fats. Accumulated toxins are not getting a passage to eliminate from the body. Fasting is a process for eliminating toxins. At that time the body is exempted from the duty of routine works. When we consume our daily foods our body don't have the time to remove the toxins because the body will be fully engaged to digest the foods.

While fasting the body, most of the time is free, because there is no duty of digesting the food. So it can engage full time in eliminating accumulated toxins. an ifthar party is scheduled to break the fasting and people like to have heavy foods after they break fasting. This creates bad effects for the body and the fasting becomes worthless. When the body is engaged in a cleansing process, it needs little time to recoup its normal jobs. So if we are not giving the body mechanism the time to recoup and immediately giving work loads of heavy digestive process by non stop eating after fasting, its outcome will be disastrous. Therefore the best thing we have to do is, take only small quantity of food which is very easy to digest. Then little by little we have to increase the food till the body does not feel overloaded. First take liquid foods or fruits, then after one or two day we can eat dishes or rice or fried items. liquid food and fruits are light foods and meat and fish and fried items are categorized as heavy.

Examine what we are doing after fast? We are eating heavily three times before next morning, that too heavy foods. I think people eat more in Ramadan month than in other months, and by their eating habits their fasting is never becomes as Koran ordered, and neither getting any spiritual benefits which its aim to achieve nor the body is getting any benefits because body is again given the workload of digesting 3 heavy foods during night, so where is it getting time to eliminate waste?

First I thought, if fast is like this then why Prophet Mohammad asserted to do it like
this? if we do this fasting then it will makes you unhealthy that is for sure, that is why Muslims are getting more diseased. Keeping this in mind i began to search how Prophet used to take fasting. Then i understood how is he take Ramadan fasting. i was surprised to understand that Prophet's fasting was not like the fasting of our time. He used dates to break the fast. The quality of date is, its the best fruit which can provide maximum vitamin, one who consumes dates daily will never have deficiency of vitamin. As we discussed earlier, fruits are very good and easily gets digested, so Prophet Mohammad was exemplary to break the fast by taking dates. Even after that he used to take only liquid foods than solid foods during night and also at the morning. As far as i know , prophet even on the other months takes only little food, and do not take meat much, he used to drink honey daily.

Therefore i understood that Prophet Mohammad never advices to fast like this, in the
way we fast now. His fasting was natural and good and he was also disease free and if you look at the mortals who lived with the prophet in those good olden days, i think most of them didn't had any serous illness and passed away naturally or martyr in wars. That is the essence of real fasting, not the fasting of our time which make mind and body weak at the same time. i hope every one understood what I mean by Ramadan fasting which can bestow infinite glory spiritually and health wise. I sincerely appeal every one to go back to the golden days and really understand and practice the way the legends fasted.
