Buddha said¨Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind one speaks or acts, suffering follows one like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox¨.
When we analyze our life, we can understand that, its the mental strength that overrules achievements. Our moods are more important than what we accomplish. A melancholic, beside his riches and fame, is more dead than alive. Mortals becoming depressed by smaller setbacks or lack of love, are not unfamiliar scenes in the modern society. Quite a few have ruined their lives by becoming drunkards or drug addicts. In addition, for some, chronic diseases are gifted by their depressed minds. Our moods determine the quality of our lives, therefore we have be careful with moods.
Actions reflect mental attitudes. Falsehood of mind brings falsehood in action. Our wicked actions are mainly the result of the wickedness present in the inner mind. While doing a deed, mind becomes the chief. Consciousness bestows an insight into the wickedness of our action. An outsider may or may not be aware of those wicked deeds but certainly your consciousness will be fully aware of those.
The pain of a wicked deed will haunt us throughout the rest of our lives. Our heart will quiver whenever that deed flashes in the memory lane, just as the wheel of an ox cart follows the footstep of the ox . If the ox goes rightward it goes rightward, if it goes leftward then leftward. Wheels are unable to escape from the misery as long as its tied to the ox cart. Memory is the ox and suffering is the wheel. Pain won´t leave you and allow you to live in peace, as long as you have memory. A bad deed once done cannot be corrected, therefore pain is inevitable.
